Overview
Camp Killoqua offers camp-based, school year programs that build leadership skills
in teen participants, grades 6-12. Killoqua is a fantastic site for these activities, with
challenge/ropes courses, outdoor and indoor spaces, skilled staff and decades of
experience building leaders.
Our flexible program options allow you to design the perfect
experience for your group, while the resident camp setting helps participants learn away
from their everyday distractions.
Killoqua is located on a quiet and secluded 185-acre site, 20 miles northwest
of Everett, on the shores of Crabapple Lake. Participant groups are welcome from public,
private and parochial schools, as well as sports teams, church youth groups and other
organizations that serve older youth. A full-service experience -- including leadership
programming, accommodations, meals, recreation and evening activities -- is offered in a
camp setting. All program activities are led by trained instructors and facilitators and
are interactive, hands-on and multi-sensory.
Camp Killoqua has been in operation since 1941, and is owned
and operated by Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council.
Goals and Objectives
Killoquas leadership program goals provide a foundation from which to design all of
our activities. The goals are solid, yet they are also flexible, allowing us to adapt to
meet the needs and goals of your group. Participants will develop new skills and be
excited about being leaders. Skills learned at Killoqua can be used at school, on teams,
informally with peers, in jobs and more.
Leadership program goals:
+ To build community spirit with participants.
+ To facilitate opportunities for participants to experience and
practice collaborative
leadership, with an emphasis on developing communication
skills and an appreciation
for diversity.
+ To develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
+ To help participants identify their personal strengths and to
use them as leaders.
+ To use the camp setting as a tool in leadership development
-- both as a site for
activities and to foster awareness of how leaders can
protect the natural environment.
These program goals incorporate proven youth leadership
development concepts, including the 40 Developmental Assets identified by the Minnesota
Search Institute, Washington states Essential Academic Learning Requirements, and
the hallmarks of successful leadership programs identified through extensive research by
groups such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Program Content
A camp experience builds community and develops leadership potential.
Our programs create a safe and exciting environment for teens to learn, practice and
refine leadership skills.
Design your program At Killoqua, we tailor our program to
meet your needs. Before arriving, you choose focus modules to match the needs of your
group. Topics may include self-assessment, initiatives/challenge/climbing wall segments,
communication styles, conflict resolution, project planning, and much more. The modules
are the core of a basic framework for all leadership programs, which may also include
introductions and group energizers, teambuilding activities, opportunities for reflection
and goal-setting and action plans.
Leadership activities are facilitated by camp staff members
who understand group dynamics and can lead fun, challenging workshops and activities. Some
modules are indoors, but outdoor locations are used whenever practical. The programs
structure allows participants to work in small and large groups as well as individually.
These varied formats guide the development of both individual and group strengths.
Program progression As with all of Killoquas programs,
progression is an important theme for leadership development. Whether its adapting
modules to different age groups or building on previous experiences, we strive to make
each activity an extension of what came before it. Progression happens not only within one
event; it builds during consecutive experiences throughout the year. Consider the benefits
of starting with a fall event, followed by winter and spring retreats or day-long trips
that compliment and build on the original event.
Framing and debriefing are other important pieces of
leadership programming. Our staff uses these tools to help participants find connections
between their activities at camp and those that happen away from their retreat.
A full-circle approach Leadership development is an ongoing
process, so we blend our activities with your existing program. Our staff will work with
your groups advisers before your event to assess your groups needs and goals,
and to plan activities accordingly. During the event, we will involve you and update you
on your groups progress. And after your event, we will develop a summary of the
experience, including group strengths, areas on which to focus, and suggestions for
follow-up activities that you can facilitate.
Sample Schedule
Following is a sample three-day schedule. Please note that each leadership group is
unique, and we will work with you to develop your own schedule. This approach allows us to
meet your needs and deliver a high-quality experience for participants.
